United States Mint Releases W-Mintmark Quarters Into Circulation

National Coin Week is coming up, April 21-April 27 to be exact, and the United States Mint is taking full advantage of all its anticipated attention.

Parallel with the initiative to bring more awareness to the coin business and all the wonderful possibilities collecting has to offer by dropping rare coins into circulation, the Mint has decided to strike and produce 10 million America the Beautiful quarters throughout the year to be put into circulation with the “W” mintmark at the forefront.

Although the West Point Mint has produced quarters before, they never were given a mintmark and therefore were on the surface level, no different than the Philadelphia minted quarters.

The plan? West Point Mint marked quarters will be randomly mixed with Philadelphia and Denver bulk bags and dropped at different banks and financial locations determined by the Federal Reserve. The first batch will be released early this month and according to the Mint will most likely be noticeable with your pocket change in just four to six weeks.

So what makes these quarters even more special? The West Point Mint, in addition to the San Francisco Mint, produce and strike primarily proof, commemorative, and bullion coins. This year the West Point Mint will be producing approximately 1% of the total circulating quarters which makes the distinguishable “W” mintmark a first of its kind.
