Proof Kennedy Half Dollars
Since 1964, Proof Kennedy Half Dollars have been issued regularly. The inaugural 1964 Proofs were struck in 90% silver, followed by 40% silver Proofs from 1965–1970. Subsequent decades saw copper‑nickel Clad Proofs as well as periodic Silver Proof issues. Mintages vary, with some years produced in large quantities for popular Proof sets and others in comparatively limited runs.
Proof coins are struck with specially prepared dies and polished planchets to create deeply mirrored fields and frosted design elements—often described as cameo or deep cameo. Intended for collectors rather than circulation, they receive multiple strikes to maximize detail and eye appeal, and are packaged by the U.S. Mint.
Key dates and types that frequently attract attention include the 1964 debut year (90% silver), the late‑1960s to early‑1970s 40% silver Proofs, and select modern Silver Proofs exhibiting exceptional contrast.
