Accented Hair Variety

Introduced in 1964 in the wake of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the Kennedy Half Dollar quickly became a national tribute. As the Mint refined the design during its inaugural year, multiple obverse iterations emerged, with the Accented Hair among the earliest. Collectors value this subtype both for its relative scarcity and its connection to the coin’s first year of issue, making the 1964 Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar a compelling target within modern U.S. Proofs.

The Accented Hair variety appears on a portion of the 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollars and is distinguished by more pronounced hair detail above President Kennedy’s ear and along the forehead---hence the nickname. On many examples, a missing lower-left serif on the letter “I” in LIBERTY and an overall crisper, more textured portrait is an indicator of the variety.
