Westward Journey Nickel Series
Discover the Westward Journey Nickel series, a short yet memorable two-year program from the United States Mint that honored the bicentennials of the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. These nickels combine compelling history, distinctive artwork, and approachable price points for collectors at every level. Collectors often pursue complete Westward Journey Nickel sets to capture the full story and design evolution across both years.
Struck in 2004 and 2005, the Westward Journey Nickel series celebrates America’s push westward. Across the two years, the Mint introduced four new reverse designs, and in 2005 unveiled a temporary new obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson by sculptor Joe Fitzgerald. It was the first major redesign of the Jefferson nickel since its 1938 debut, making the Westward Journey Nickel series a standout moment in modern U.S. coinage.
In 2004, the Peace Medal reverse depicted a clasped-hands motif and the peace medal presented to Native American leaders, while the Keelboat reverse highlighted the vessel used during the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In 2005, the Bison reverse honored the American bison encountered on the journey, and the Ocean in View reverse featured surf and Jefferson’s transcribed “Ocean in view! O! The joy!” from Clark’s journal.
The 2006 set, referred to as the "Return to Monticello," features a new portrait of Jefferson facing forward and a restored Monticello.
