Proof Franklin Half Dollars
The United States Mint introduced the Proof Franklin Half Dollar in 1950 and continued production through 1963, a period that coincided with profound cultural and political change. Designed by John R. Sinnock, Proof issues were made specifically for collectors and exhibit superior detail and finish compared to regular circulation strikes.
Proof Franklin Half Dollars were struck using specially prepared dies and planchets, often polished to produce sharp details and mirror-like fields. Early issues tend to present brilliant surfaces, while later years more frequently display frosted devices that create the sought-after “cameo” and “deep cameo” contrasts. Because Proof coins are struck multiple times under controlled conditions, they typically exhibit crisp lettering, well-defined bell lines, and refined artistry that appeal to discerning collectors.
