The United States Mint will release its next 2025 American Women's Quarter tomorrow beginning at 12pm EST. Dr. Vera Rubin will be featured on the quarter dollars as they will be available in 2-rolls sets, 3-roll sets, and 100-coin bags from Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco (3-roll sets only).
A revolutionary astronomer who pioneered work on galaxy rotation, Dr. Vera Rubin’s observations were the first persuasive evidence of dark matter, which was a major scientific discovery that would transform our understanding of the universe. Dr. Rubin’s work in the 1970s confirmed that the vast majority of the mass in the universe is invisible. Prior to her contribution, Rubin would struggle as a female astronomer in the male dominated field. She would fight to break down those barriers throughout her whole career, researching the sexism women faced. In addition, she mentored other women in the field of astronomy and fought for gender parity in science, pushing for representation of women on scientific committees, as professors, and as conference speakers.
Dr. Vera Rubin’s profile is seen gazing upward on the reverse of the design, taking in galaxies around her. DR. VERA RUBIN, QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are inscribed. DARK MATTER is also inscribed slightly incuse to represent the invisible mass that is found in our galaxy.
Laura Gardin Fraser’s portrait of George Washington continues to grace the common obverse throughout the program. The design was originally entered into a contest for the 1932 quarter which honored the First President’s birth. LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 2025 are seen inscribed along with the corresponding mintmarks.
The 100-coin bags from Philadelphia and Denver retail at $47.25, the 2-roll sets at $42.00, and the 3-roll sets (including San Francisco) at $63.00.
Stacey Park Milbern and Althea Gibson are upcoming for the program that is set to officially end this year.
