Lincoln Shield Cent
Debuting in 2010, the Lincoln Shield Cent marked a pivotal design transition for the nation’s smallest denomination. After commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial with four 2009 reverse designs and closing the chapter on the long-running Lincoln Memorial reverse (1959–2008), the U.S. Mint adopted a single, enduring motif for the reverse: a Union shield. This design was chosen to symbolize the preservation of the Union and fiscal stability, linking the coin to historic themes that date back to America’s formative years. The introduction of the Shield Cent thus married tradition with modern design principles, creating a cohesive successor to the earlier reverses while maintaining the iconic Lincoln portrait that has appeared on the cent since 1909.
