Lincoln Memorial Cents
Introduced in 1959, the Lincoln memorial cent replaced the Lincoln Wheat reverse that had circulated since 1909. The new reverse—designed by Frank Gasparro, who later served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint—depicts the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. framed by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and ONE CENT below, with E PLURIBUS UNUM centered above the Memorial. A detail that delights collectors and history enthusiasts alike is the inclusion of Daniel Chester French’s statue of Lincoln rendered in miniature on the reverse. This unique design element means Lincoln appears on both sides of the coin, making the cent a rare example of a U.S. coin featuring the same subject on obverse and reverse.
