Type 1 vs. Type 2
Type I is the initial 1913 reverse design, identified by the bison standing on a raised mound with “FIVE CENTS” prominently placed at the base. While visually striking, this exposed placement left the denomination vulnerable to rapid wear in circulation. Early 1913 strikes used higher relief and left some legends less protected, contributing to faster fading of key details. Type I coins were struck at Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S), with each mint showing subtle differences in strike strength and typical wear patterns.
Introduced later in 1913, Type II moves “FIVE CENTS” into a recessed area beneath the bison to shield the denomination from wear. The ground under the bison is flattened, and reverse details are refined to enhance long-term legibility and extend the coin’s service life.
