Peace Dollars

Born from postwar optimism, the Peace Dollar was shaped by the Pittman Act of 1918, which authorized the melting and recoining of millions of silver dollars. With the need for new coinage established, the U.S. Mint sought a design that reflected a forward-looking spirit and held a competition in 1921. Anthony de Francisci’s concept won for its modern interpretation of liberty and its strong symbolism suited to a nation seeking stability.

The shift from the Morgan Dollar, which had circulated since 1878, mirrored changing tastes in American coinage. Late in 1921, the Mint issued the first Peace Silver Dollars in high relief, creating a dramatic look but posing production challenges. By 1922, the design was adapted to lower relief to improve striking efficiency and die life, a change that remained through the rest of the series.

Minting spanned 1921 through 1935 with notable highlights. The 1921 Philadelphia issue in high relief is a key date and a centerpiece for many collectors. Production surged in 1922 and 1923 across multiple mints, while the mid-1920s brought smaller mintages for certain Denver and San Francisco issues. Limited coinage returned in 1934 and 1935, producing low-mintage pieces important for set completion. Throughout the series, economic factors, silver policy, and evolving hub and die work introduced variety and collecting intrigue for the Peace Dollar and the widely collected Peace Silver Dollar type.
