1921 High Relief Peace Silver Dollar
REVERSE: Features a calm American eagle resting on a rock holding an olive branch, with rays rising behind it to symbolize a new dawn. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM appear above, while ONE DOLLAR and PEACE anchor the bottom. The eagle’s peaceful posture contrasts with the Morgan Dollar’s aggressive imagery, reinforcing the coin’s message of reconciliation rather than triumph.
OBVERSE: Depicts a left-facing Liberty wearing a radiant crown reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty’s spikes. Her flowing hair and sharp contours reflect contemporary artistic sensibilities rather than classical styles. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date 1921 at the base. Anthony de Francisci’s modern interpretation gives the coin a bold, sculptural look.
1921 Peace Dollars
The 1921 Peace Dollar marks a turning point in American numismatics. Struck to celebrate the end of World War I and the nation’s commitment to peace, it inaugurated the Peace Dollar series and is renowned for its dramatic high relief. Collectors often refer to this first-year issue as the 1921 Peace Silver Dollar, highlighting both its silver composition and its special status as a debut type.
The Peace Dollar emerged from a postwar push to honor peace and signal a new era. After decades of the Morgan Dollar (1878–1904, 1921), momentum grew for a fresh design that embodied optimism and renewal. The American Numismatic Association advocated for a commemorative peace-themed dollar, and a formal competition selected sculptor Anthony de Francisci’s concept late in 1921.
