Liberty Seated Half Dimes (1837-1873)
The Liberty Seated design was part of a broader redesign initiated by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht in the late 1830s. Introduced in 1837, the motif follows Neoclassical ideals prevalent on 19th-century American coinage. These half dimes circulated widely in everyday commerce, especially before the introduction of the nickel five-cent coin in 1866. The denomination ended with the 1873 Coinage Act, which restructured small silver coinage and concluded several long-running series.
