1864 Bronze Indian Cent

The bronze issue emerged amid the Civil War as the Mint sought to improve circulation. Lighter bronze planchets reduced costs and generally delivered sharper strikes than the earlier copper-nickel alloy. Bronze cents typically display a richer chocolate-brown appearance and finer detail compared to the paler, heavier copper-nickel pieces from 1859 through early 1864. Late-year additions include the Shield Reverse and the celebrated “L” on ribbon obverse variety, commonly collected as the 1864 L Indian Head cent.

Bronze issue specifications: diameter about 19 mm; weight approximately 3.11 grams; composition 95% copper with tin and zinc; plain edge. Earlier copper-nickel cents weighed around 4.67 grams and show a lighter hue. All 1864 Indian Cents were struck at the Philadelphia Mint and carry no mintmark.
