2020 Basketball HOF Commem Half Dollar

Issued by the United States Mint, this distinctive curved shaped coin will come in Original Government Packaging accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

REVERSE: Features a basketball going through a hoop with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and HALF DOLLAR inscribed.

OBVERSE: Depicts three players reaching for a ball to symbolize teamwork. The players represent the game's inclusivity as there is a man, a woman, and a disabled man in a wheelchair. The background of the design shows a net with the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 2020, and S.

Basketball HOF Commemorative Program

Congress authorized the program under Public Law 115-343, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act, directing the Mint to produce curved coins in 2020 for the Hall’s 60th anniversary. Surcharges from sales were designated to benefit the Hall of Fame’s educational and outreach efforts, consistent with the mission of many modern commemorative programs.

The U.S. Mint offered two standard finishes—Proof and Uncirculated—and later introduced a separate colorized Proof half dollar, notable as part of the Mint’s first-ever colorized U.S. coins. Proof coins were struck in San Francisco and bear the S mint mark; Uncirculated coins were struck in Denver with the D mint mark. The colorized Proof also carries an S mint mark.
