Lincoln Wheat Cents
The Lincoln cent debuted in 1909 to mark Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday. Designed by Victor David Brenner, it was the first regular U.S. coin to depict a real person. Production began in 1909 at Philadelphia and San Francisco. Early pieces carried Brenner’s initials, VDB, on the reverse; public pushback led to their removal later that year, creating the celebrated 1909-S VDB key date. Through the 1910s and 1920s, mintages varied, with scarcer dates such as 1914-D. The 1931-S is a low-mintage standout from the early 1930s. Wartime needs prompted a composition change in 1943, when cents were made of zinc-coated steel to conserve copper; bronze returned in 1944, using recycled shell brass. The design continued with minor refinements through 1958, and in 1959 the Memorial reverse replaced the wheat ears.
