Liberty Seated Quarters
The Liberty Seated quarter is a pillar of 19th-century U.S. coinage. Struck from 1838 through 1891, it spans the pre–Civil War era, Reconstruction, and the Gilded Age. Collectors prize the series for its graceful design, rich set of varieties, and direct ties to pivotal moments in American history. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Seated Liberty quarter dollar extends the aesthetic used across contemporary silver denominations.
Key changes include the introduction of drapery at Liberty’s elbow, the presence of stars versus a “Legend” obverse, arrows flanking the date to denote weight changes, and the addition of the IN GOD WE TRUST motto. Early issues (1838–1840) appear as No Drapery and With Drapery types. Stars encircle Liberty on most pre-1866 pieces; beginning in 1866, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA appears around Liberty on the obverse, replacing the stars (the “Legend” obverse). Arrows at the date appear in 1853 (paired that year only with reverse rays) and again in 1873–1874 to signal further weight adjustments. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is introduced in 1866 on the reverse, aligning with changes across other denominations.
