Standing Liberty Quarters
Introduced amid an early 20th-century effort to elevate U.S. coin design, the Standing Liberty quarter followed the success of the Saint-Gaudens gold pieces and the Buffalo nickel and Mercury dime. The goal was to retire dated motifs and express American ideals on everyday coinage.
Minted from 1916 to 1930, the series spans World War I, the postwar expansion, and the onset of the Great Depression. Public sentiment around national defense and preparedness shaped both the iconography and reception, while late-1920s economic strains influenced mintages and survival in higher grades. Sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil designed the coin under the guidance of Mint Director Robert W. Woolley and subsequent officials. Early reaction mixed admiration for the design with criticism of practical issues, leading to swift modifications in 1917.
