Carson City Morgan Dollars
The Carson City Mint was established to process ore flowing from the nearby Comstock Lode, and it operated during intermittent years from 1870 to 1893. Morgan Dollars were struck there from 1878 to 1893, connecting each CC coin to a foundational chapter of Western mining and American expansion. This history gives every Carson City Morgan a narrative that extends beyond its silver content.
What sets CC Morgans apart is the bold CC mint mark on the reverse beneath the wreath, paired with George T. Morgan’s famed Liberty Head obverse and eagle reverse. Compared with Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans, output at Carson City was smaller. The combination of limited production, heavy Western circulation, and later government releases produced a date-and-grade distribution that differs markedly from other mints.
Collectors and investors prize Carson City Morgan Dollars for several reasons. Rarity by date and grade underpins demand, with issues like 1879-CC, 1889-CC, 1891-CC, and 1893-CC recognized as key or semi-key dates, especially in higher Mint State. Even more available dates command attention thanks to the cachet of the CC mint mark. Provenance enhances desirability as well: large quantities were stored in Treasury vaults and released through the General Services Administration (GSA) sales in the 1970s, creating a clear trail of authenticity and originality that the market values.
