1895 O Morgan Dollar

Struck at the New Orleans Mint (1838-1861, 1879-1909), this 90% silver Morgan dollar features the 'O' mintmark on the reverse. It will come in Good to Very Good condition. A major key date in the series, only 450,000 coins were issued.

REVERSE: Depicts a heraldic eagle with spread wings holding arrows and an olive branch surrounded by a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, O, and ONE DOLLAR are inscribed.

OBVERSE: Features a young Liberty facing left with LIBERTY inscribed in her cap. E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1895 are also inscribed along with 13 stars surrounding her on either side.

Morgan Silver Dollars

The Morgan Dollar is a U.S. silver dollar issued from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Each coin is 90% silver and 10% copper, containing 0.77344 troy ounce of pure silver. Standard specifications are 26.73 grams in weight, 38.1 mm in diameter, and a reeded edge. Morgan Dollars were struck at several mints: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Carson City (CC), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), and Denver (D, 1921 only).

Struck in large numbers and tied to the lore of the American West, they combine investment-grade silver with iconic design. Authorized by the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 and supported by the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, the series moved immense quantities of silver into circulation and Treasury storage. Mid-20th-century releases from Treasury vaults turned the Morgan Dollar into a foundation of American numismatics.

George T. Morgan, an English-born engraver who joined the U.S. Mint in 1876, created the design. His naturalistic style modernized U.S. coinage art, while Chief Engraver William Barber and later Charles E. Barber guided adjustments to relief and dies throughout the series. Collectors watch for notable varieties: 1878 8 Tail Feathers and 7 Tail Feathers reverses, the Second and Third Reverse hub types with different arrow feather details, and the 1921 relief changes with minor style differences. Other points of interest include micro O mintmarks, overdates, and doubled dies.
