Three Cent Nickels

During and after the Civil War, widespread hoarding of gold and silver coins left everyday commerce short of small change. To bridge the gap, the government issued fractional paper notes and explored new base-metal coinage. The three-cent nickel emerged in this environment as a durable replacement for fragile fractional currency and a convenient piece for low-value transactions. As interest in three cent nickels grew, the coin quickly became a familiar presence in postwar circulation.

A familiar price point helped shape the denomination: the three-cent postal rate, widely used in the mid-19th century, attuned the public to a three-cent payment. Although postage rates changed over time, the concept stuck. Congress authorized the three-cent nickel with the Act of March 3, 1865, specifying a copper-nickel alloy. The U.S. Mint began striking coins that year and continued through 1889. Notably, the silver three-cent piece lingered briefly alongside the nickel version but was quickly eclipsed by the more practical copper-nickel coin.

Early circulation was strong as the coin displaced fractional notes and eased everyday purchases. By the late 1870s and 1880s, changing postage and economic conditions, the rise of the five-cent nickel, and abundant small coinage reduced demand. Mintages fell sharply—especially in the 1880s—paving the way for discontinuation after 1889.
