OBVERSE: Features Liberty in stride draped in the flag with the sun behind her. LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date are insribed.

Walking Liberty Half Dollars

Struck from 1916 to 1947, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar emerged from a 1916 competition to elevate American coinage design. Sculptor Adolph A. Weinman—also the designer of the Mercury Dime—won with a bold, patriotic concept that replaced the Barber design. The series spans World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, and World War II, with subtle design and hub adjustments along the way. Coins were minted at Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S). In 1916 and part of 1917, the mint mark appears on the obverse below “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Later in 1917 it moved to the reverse, left of the rock beneath the eagle.

Key dates and varieties include 1916-S, 1917-S Obverse Mint Mark, and 1917-D Obverse Mint Mark as early semi-keys; 1919, 1919-D, and 1919-S as notably scarce in higher circulated grades; and the core keys of 1921, 1921-D, and 1921-S with low mintages and tough strikes. The low-mintage 1938-D is also coveted.
