As the final year issue of the Indian cent series, this budget-friendly option was minted at Philadelphia and has a mintage of 14.3 million.

REVERSE: Features the laurel wreath with a shield at the top. ONE CENT is inscribed in the center.

OBVERSE: Depicts Liberty in a feathered headdress along with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1909.

Indian Head Cents

First introduced in 1859 and revised in 1860 with the familiar laurel wreath reverse, the Indian Head cent ran through 1909. The final-year status carries special significance: the U.S. Mint launched the Lincoln cent in 1909 to honor Abraham Lincoln’s 100th birthday, creating an overlap that makes this date especially sought after. This is why the 1909 Indian Cent, often called the 1909 Indian Head by collectors, is a perennial favorite.

Designed by James Barton Longacre, the 1909 cent was struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc), measuring 19 mm with a plain edge. Two mints produced the date: Philadelphia (no mint mark) and San Francisco (“S” mint mark). Philadelphia output exceeded 14 million, while San Francisco coined about 309,000 pieces, making the 1909-S a prized semi-key.
