REVERSE: Features a large number '2' in the center surrounded by a wreath. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and CENTS are inscribed.

OBVERSE: Depicts a Union Shield along with ribbon and laurel branches. IN GOD WE TRUST and the date are inscribed.

Two Cent Piece

Introduced in 1864 to address wartime coin shortages, the bronze two cent piece filled a crucial gap as precious metal coins were hoarded and fractional paper currency struggled to meet everyday needs. Its appearance also marked the first use of “In God We Trust,” reflecting the era’s call for national unity and symbolism. For many Americans, the 2 cent piece became a practical substitute for small transactions that had become difficult during the period.

The series ran from 1864 to 1873 and was produced exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint; no mint marks appear on circulation strikes. The first year, 1864, is known for two motto styles: the scarcer Small Motto and the more common Large Motto. Later dates like 1867 and 1870–1872 can be challenging in higher grades, while the 1873 issue exists only as a Proof and closes the series when the denomination was discontinued.
