Proof Jefferson Nickels
The Jefferson Nickel debuted in 1938, replacing the Buffalo Nickel. Proof Jefferson Nickels were issued from 1938 through 1942, paused during World War II, and resumed in 1950. Since 1968, Proof nickels have been struck at the San Francisco Mint and carry the “S” mintmark. Prior to 1968, the five-cent denomination were issued by Philadelphia.
Collectors gravitate to issues with low mintages, strong eye appeal, and distinctive finishes. Early Proofs (1938–1942) are prized for their scarcity and classic brilliance. Postwar Proofs from the 1950s and early 1960s offer accessible entry points with attractive quality. From 1968 forward, San Francisco “S” Proofs dominate, and cameo designations play a major role in determining premiums for Proof Jefferson Nickels.
