The Best of the Mint Series will continue with its third of five releases tomorrow beginning at 12pm EST. The United States Mint will honor the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
Honoring America’s semiquincentennial, the Mint has put together a five-set series paying homage to United States coinage. The sets will feature a reissued gold coin along with companion silver medals depicting modern designs and reflecting the meaning of their gold counterparts.
Like the first two releases, the 1916 Walking Liberty Half Dollar Gold Coin will look like the 2016 centennial version. The obverse features Liberty wrapped in the American flag as she strides towards the sunrise carrying both branches of laurel and oak. LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and 1916 will be inscribed along with the 'W' mintmark from West Point. The 24kt .9999 fine gold coin will also showcase the Liberty Bell privy mark with the number 250 to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. The reverse will depict the all too familiar eagle as it perches on a mountaintop. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and HALF DOLLAR are inscribed.
Elements of the original Walking Liberty half dollar will be reimagined on the 1oz .999 fine silver companion medal. The obverse will start the rolling design as Liberty is seen extending her right hand towards the sunrise while carrying branches in her left. Continuing on the reverse, the eagle will be in flight as the sunrise is at its back, evoking the image of freedom. LIBERTY and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA are inscribed. The medal is struck at Philadelphia.
There is a household limit of one and a mintage limit of 30,000.
The remaining two releases will honor the 1804 Silver Dollar and the 1907 St. Gaudens High Relief $20 Gold Coin.
