We have often talked about early United States coinage in our blogs. In fact, we often talk about those coins in our series following along with Whitman Publishing's 100 Greatest United States Coins. However, many coincide the beginning of the United States Mint as the beginning of our coinage. While partially true depending on how you look at it, it is the coinage that came before that set into motion the founding of our nation.
With that in mind, we are introducing a new blog series that will reference the work of Q. David Bowers and his text Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins. The 2nd edition publication is a vast well of information as Bowers highlights the impact of early settlers and the problems they faced in the initial formation of the colonies.
Money in America was quite different than what is seen today. We will venture through the coins used in different colonies, the foreign coins that flooded America, the creation and preparation of dies and designs, distribution, and the economic hardships that affected their use.
